Most laboratories which use chemicals are subject to the OSHA standard titled: Occupational Exposure to Hazardous Chemicals in Laboratories; commonly known as the "Laboratory Safety Standard". The goal of this Model Plan is to give assistance with complying with this regulation. It is not intended to provide a review of the details of the regulation - for that see Laboratory Safety Standard.
The major requirement of the Lab Standard is to develop a written, lab-specific Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP) which addresses the policies, Standard Operating Procedures, etc. that ensure that employees are protected from harm due to chemicals. Our Model CHP gets you started. It allows you to edit the word document as needed for your organization.
If you would like assistance customizing our Model Plan for your organization, please call Mary Thompson at 508-647-1900 or email Mthompson@labsafetyinstitute.org.
Our MCHP is one of the best models available today from the Laboratory Safety Institute (edited by Brian Wazlaw and James Kaufman). The plan covers all the OSHA require areas:
Standard Operating Procedures
Control Measures and Implementation
Fume Hood and Emergency Equipment
Training and Information
Circumstances Requiring Prior Approval
Medical Consultation and Examination
Responsibilities for Chemical Hygiene
Particularly Hazardous Substances
It comes in both a printed and electronic format (Word 97) so that it is easily customizable to your laboratory policies and procedures.
Electronic version and CD only version are available in our webstore.
This copy comes with both the printed version in a 3-ring binder along with the CD.
